I've found that most people who love domestic cats also love wild cats. So I wanted to tell you about the Lion Guardians Blog. It's run by Antony Kasanga, Assistant Director or the Lion Guardians program and he writes about the events of the lions in the area of Kenya he protects.

Lion Guardians was started in 2006 in response to the slaughter of over 150 lions since 2001. The Lion Guardians, teach people about the lions and to monitor the movements of the lions. They are trying to equip each lion with a GPS tracking unit so they can map out where the lions go.
I've always wanted to get up close to a wild cat, cheetahs in particular but I know that will never happen, and probably shouldn't ever happen because wild cats are unpredictable.
Just like our little "wild" cats that live with us who are are unpredictable at times. You know what I mean, those sudden outbursts of energy that has your cat racing around the house and jumping on furniture, defying gravity. Wild cats are exactly the same except hundreds of pounds heavier and a thousand times stronger. I certainly wouldn't want to be around when a 400 lb lion gets a burst of energy like that!
But it is painful for me to think that people are out there who kill these beautiful, intelligent and compassionate animals for sport, religion or medicine. In some cases people have encroached on the wild cat's territory so much that suddenly there are wild cats in people's backyards. Forced out of their territory, these cats get caught in a maze of people, houses, gunfire and in some cases spears. Imagine what that must be like, one day you are hanging out with your pride and then next minute you're being shot at, simply because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Thanks to people like Antony, whoare helping to preserve these precious wild forms of our in house lovey dovey domestic cats. So check out the Lion Guardian Blog to find out what is going on with African Lions in Kenya.

I don't know about you, but I love to watch wild cats playing like kittens. It's fascinating to see these huge animals, weighting in at 400 pounds batting around a ball, or in this case a pumpkin, like it was a fuzzy cat toy.
This video is one of my favorite Halloween/Pumpkin Videos. These tigers, lions and I think it's a bearcat are having a great time playing with the pumpkins. Cameron the lion and Zabu the white tiger are so protective of their pumpkins, like they would be after a kill. Very much like domestic cats will do with a new toy. Very cute.
Cameron and Zabu came to Bg Cat Rescue together so they live in the same compound and they are very attached. They were in a horrible little zoo in New England that kept them together in hopes that they would breed. That never happened and since they've been at Big Cat Rescue, Cameron has had a vasectomy. They will live together for the rest of their lives at Big Cat Rescue.
You have to watch this video through to the end, one lioness named Sarabi, was perhaps expecting something a little sweeter... Maybe a pumpkin pie, not just a pumpkin - watch her face at about 4:43 after she tastes it. Sarabi has very human-like facial expressions.
This is a follow up to the post Abused Lions and Tigers saved by Big Cat Rescue. This video shows how the lions and tigers are adapting to their new life. They have a large area to live in with a pool! They are slimming down and becoming more active.
It is sad to see, but if you look in the cat's mouths you can see that they don't have their big canine teeth. They have to be fed a special diet that doesn't require them to tear their food.
Big Cat Rescue is one of the best facilities. But they need donations to keep their operation running. You can donate as little or as much as you can. If you have a spare $25.00 you can adopt a big cat.

Six wild cats, 2 lions and 4 tigers owned by some idiot in Ohio named Diana McCourt had their claws removed and their fangs so that she could let people take pictures and pet the wild cats. These poor cats were mutilated for entertainment!
This makes me sick. But the story has a happy ending. These six cats, kind of formed a pride because they had lived together and endured abuse together for so long. Big Cat Rescue of Florida was able to rescue all 6 cats.
Originally, the only cat to be rescued was Joseph the youngest male who still had his canine teeth. But when it was discovered that the cats were like family and had been for at least 9 years, Big Cat Rescue appealed to it's supporters for funding to take the whole pride.
You can see how they were transported in this video. Thank you to Big Cat Rescue.
If you see or hear of abuse to any animal, you can report it at 911 Animal Abuse. Post pictures and tell your story. Help get the word out and make a difference in an animal's life.

These are the final two parts to the movie: Christian, the lion who thought he was people. I keep calling it a movie, but it's really a documentary - it's a true story and there are no actors or stunt doubles. Christian the lion is played by Christian himself.
In part 10, you can see how Christian's comfort with Ace and John made Mona, Lisa and Supercub comfortable with them too. The film then shows Christian's parents in a cramped zoo and compares their lives to Christian's. Such a touching film. I just finished watching it and I am completely overwhelmed.

In Part 7 of Christian the Lion who thought he was people, two new lionesses Juma and Jessica, are introduced to Christian and Boy. They were too wild so it was up to Christian to befriend them and get them to stay in the little pride. But the wild lions outside of camp were too strong and too territorial.
In Part 8, George visits the Nairobi animal orphanage to get two more females Mona and Lisa, with Juma, that made three females, Christian and a recovering Boy in this little pride. Mona and Lisa were a little more tame than Juma so would require more care in rehabilitating them to the wild. Introducing and integrating these lions has to be done carefully.

I am totally intrigued by the story of Christian the LIon. I guess because I love cats and I have always wondered what it would be like to domesticate a wild cat. This story comes as close as I'll ever get to knowing what it is like to live with a wild cat. I've blogged about Christian before, you can see a brief video of Christian the Lion here.
The full story of Christian and how he was integrated into the wild, is available in ten minute segments. If you haven't already seen the first two segments of the movie, see Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room: The Movie Parts 1 and 2. And the next two segments of Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room: The Movie Parts 3 and 4
In this segment, Ace and John have to say goodbye to Christian the Lion and Christian has to start learning how to be a wild cat. Boy, Christian and Kitania along with George Adamson, start their own little family.
Part 6 of Christian's story repeats some of the earlier video. Start it at about 2:20 to pick up where the 5th segment leaves off. Boy and Christian went off to hunt together and Kitania was left behind by herself on the banks of the river. They waited and watched for her for three days.

I wrote a brief summary of the story of Christian the Lion a while back with a video that highlights their reunion. For the short version of the story, I suggest you see that video.
But for those of you who are intrigued by the full story of Christian, the full length movie is available but it has been cut into ten minute segments. If you haven't already seen the first two segments of the movie, see Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room: The Movie Parts 1 and 2
The movie is hard to find, because when it was released in the early seventies, the movie had three names:
Christian the Lion
The Lion at World's End
Christian, the lion who thought he was people
In this segment, they found a piece of land and built a compound for Christian and the humans to live in protection while Christian learned how to live in the wild. They introduced Christian to Boy, another tame lion who had been living wild for years. They hoped to create a new pride. Part 3 shows Boy, a surgery that Boy had to endure and the love and trust that Boy had in George. Lions are truly amazing animals.
In Part 4, we see the surgery and recovery of Boy and we find out that a female lion cub was found too. Then we see the introduction of Boy to Christian, who still seemed to have his natural wild instincts intact. Watching the three lions, Boy, Christian and the female Kitania interact was beautiful and exciting but we still don't know if Boy will accept Christian.

Christian the Lion hugs his human friends after being in the wild for a year - true story (video)
These two guys, Ace and John bought a lion cub from Herod's of London in the 1960's and named him Christian. But Christian, although quite tame, got too big and British officials would not allow them to keep him. So with the help of George Adamson, the first human to establish the idea of wildlife conservations, they took him to Africa to learn how to live in the wild at Kora National Park.
Now this story is already pretty interesting, in the 60's apparently you could buy a wild animal at a department store and take him home with you. But the story gets even better, after this lion was taken out to Africa, and was taught how to be a wild cat, Ace and John went back to Africa to see him. They were told by George, the man who trained him to be wild, that he had not been seen for 9 months. Which means that Christian has fully adapted to life in the wild. They were told that Christian won't remember the two men because it had been so long since he saw them last.
Here is where it gets really interesting. The night before John and Ace were to arrive at the camp out side the conservation area where Christian now lived, Christian, his lionesses and their cubs all showed up at the camp. Christian was waiting for John and Ace on top of a rock! According to George Adamson, who spent significant time with lions in the wild, he believed that lions have a mysterious, telepathic communication ability with humans. This was proof of that, Christian, who had no reason to come back to camp, returned with his pride to meet with his human friends.
This video shows Ace and John meeting with Christian and you can actually see Christians face change when he sees his old friends, then he runs to them and embraces them. This video shows the human like emotions that a lion is capable of feeling. Apparently, after the video, the three friends hung out at camp until the middle of the night when Christian returned to his pride leaving Ace and John exhausted.
Read the full story, complete with quotes and facts Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room. I'm trying to get a copy of the full length DVD - but for now, I've found video clips of the movie. Christian, the lion who thought he was people.
Look for the part when the lion first spots them at 0:35 secs. He recognizes Ace and John immediately! Then as he runs to them, you can almost feel Christian's excitement!
