Cat News: August 2008 Archives

pictures_of_cats_chase_bear_up_tree.jpgI've seen this photo so many times. I was sure the photo came from someone's overactive imagination, photoshop and too much time to waste. But check this out, a real news story Cat Chases Bear Up Tree. There is an actual cat a 15 pound red tabby in West Milford, New Jersey named Jack who chased a black bear up a tree!

The amazing thing was Jack is declawed so his fierce presence was what scared the bear. What I find interesting is a cat is the perfect snack size for a black bear. Apparently, Jack didn't know he was on the menu!

Pictures_of_cat_house_on_the_kings_virgil.jpg700 cats and several dogs living in harmony on an acreage north of Los Angeles. The cats are clean, well-cared for and are all available for adoption. How did all of these cats get there?

The Founder of Cat House on the Kings, Lynea Lattanzio created a true sanctuary for cats. After visiting a local animal shelter, she returned home with 15 kittens needing to be bottle-fed. After that, she knew this is what she wanted to do.

She started out with 92 cats and the number has increased to up to 700! People call her and ask her to take cats and kittens that were not wanted, feral, or going to be destroyed. She takes them all, it is a one of a kind, no-cage, no-kill cat sanctuary where cats can live out their lives or wait to be adopted into a loving home.

The cats can go in and out of the house, eat and drink at 10 different feeding stations, climb trees, run, play and sleep in their cat paradise. You'll see in the video how these cats are treated, with love and respect.

You can donate money, time or items the humans need to keep taking care of these cats. It only costs $1 to feed a cat for one day, but with 700 cats, that is a lot of cat food! You can also sponsor a cat for $15.00 a month.

Watch this video, you'll be amazed. I know I've never seen a cat shelter like this before.

A cat's daily diary vs a dog's daily diary...

pictures_of_cats_jelly.jpgIf you let your cat outside when you go to work, do you ever wonder what he's doing all day?

Perhaps he's visiting some other family and getting love and attention all afternoon then comes home for his evening meal and more loving.

That's what I think happens to Jelly, a cat in London who spends his days at the police station.

I just read about Jelly today. Apparently, this black and white tom cat comes to the police station and spends his day eating treats and sleeping in a box in a case worker's office.

Brilliant!

This cat is smart, he is well fed, affectionate and groomed so he must belong to someone. But during the day, I guess he is a little lonely, so he spends time with his pals down at the precinct.

So I ask you, do you know where your cat goes? Wouldn't it be nice to follow him one day and see if he has a daytime family, just like Jelly?

Picture_of-four_eared_cat.jpgA Chicago bar owner kept this little kitten in a cage in his bar for his patrons' amusement. Everyone seemed to think he was a devil because his extra ears made it look like he had horns.

But Ted and Valerie Rock adopted the kitten and now Yoda is a loving and playful family member. Pictures of Yoda have prompted people like Tyra Banks and the networks CNN and ABC to air clips about him.

No one knows how the mutation happened but his vet thinks he is perfectly healthy. He doesn't have hearing problems, nor can he hear particularly well. His hearing is perfectly normal. As a matter of fact, Yoda is not the first cat with four ears, there have been others reported in Germany, Russia, and the UK.

This kitten was lucky to have been adopted by a family that loves him. They won't let him outside on his own just in case someone tries to steal him. He's also been microchipped so he gets back to his rightful owners if he's ever lost. Here is a video clip of Yoda.

A cat's daily diary vs a dog's daily diary...

pictures_cats_and_dogs_living_together.jpgIf you are thinking about getting a cat and a dog, you'll need some pointers. There is a lot of truth to the saying, "fighting like cats and dogs" unless you introduce your dog to your cat carefully. According to a study soon to be published by Applied Animal Behavior Science, if you follow some ground rules your cat and dog can become the most loving companions.

1) It is best to make the introductions while they are both young, around 4 - 6 months old is the best. In fact, at this age, they are young enough to learn each other's body language and communicate with each other.

2) Get your cat first and get him used to the house before you get a dog. This way the cat can establish his territory before the dog enters the territory. For the cat this ensures a sense of security. The cat becomes the "alpha dog" in that territory. Which makes your cat much more receptive to the dog and makes the dog respect the cat. Which is exactly what your cat needs to be happy in this arrangement.

pictures_of_cats_dogs_getting_along.jpg3) All cats and all dogs have their own personalities so if you've followed steps one and two and your cat and dog are still not getting along, it is probably a clash of personalities so you just have to make the best of it. Give your cat a safe place where the dog can't go and give him lots of loving.

Picture_of_cat_reunited.jpgThanks to the North Devon Animal Ambulance in the UK, Mousie has gone home to Ira Bauert in Germany. Ira was on vacation in the UK when Mousie went missing and Ms Lewis from the North Devon Animal Ambulance discovered the cat's microchip.

I can't think of a better reason to microchip your cat! I've blogged about taking your cat on vacation with you, how to choose a good petsitter and I've talked about what to do to prevent your cat from getting lost, but this is a story about a cat getting lost on vacation. Luckily this owner did the right thing and had Mousie microchipped. I know it took a year and a year is a long, long time to a cat and a cat lover, but it is better to wait a year than to never see your cat again! This was a happy reunion, but so many cats never find there way home.

savetigerpic3.jpgSo how do you like this. The government of Nepal created a refuge that is 117 sq miles and it even connects to two other conservation areas in India for Bengal Tigers, Rhinos, birds and deer. You'd think that would be great news. And I'm sure it was great news to wild cat conservationists and the World Wild Life Fund.

But poachers are going into this area and shooting the animals. It's like shooting fish in a barrel! The poachers know where the cats are, even know when the place is patrolled and then they go in and kill the Tigers. It's horrific. These wild animals think they have some freedom, and the people who put them there think that this is a safe place for them to be, but they get shot because they are so easy to find.WWFImgFullitem9491.jpg

In 2005, a survey of the Bengal Tiger Population in the Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve in Nepal and the numbers were up to 50 Bengal Tigers. But in April 2008, those numbers have dwindled to 6! Yes, you read that right, it's not a typo 6 Bengal Tigers left in refuge that was designed to protect them. Disgusting. Apparently, the poachers take every part of the tiger, unlike rhinos, where only the tusks are taken. So there is no trace of the animal once it has been killed.

pictures_of_cat_saves_owner_from_fire.jpgThe fire was caused by lightening and Grace George, 97, was sound asleep. Boo Boo her cat was howling so loudly that he woke up Grace. It's funny because Grace was annoyed by Boo Boo's meowing so she was just going to put him out, but when she awoke and smelled fire, she ran out of the house and flagged down a car who's driver called the fire dept.

Boo Boo was a stray Grace had taken in about 15 years ago, he suffered a little smoke inhalation but other than that was fine. Grace said she was going to buy him a can of salmon as a special treat for saving her life.

savetigerpic1.jpgNot sure this is a good idea. I'm waiting to find out how this goes. I blogged about the dwindling Bengal tiger population before. Tigers are so highly sought after by poachers for their skin and body parts that any attempt at conserving them has led to disaster.

So now, they take perfectly happy Bengal tigers out of the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan and move them to the Sariska Tiger Reserve in India where the entire Bengal Tiger population was wiped out just a few years ago. They are hoping that the big cats populate the reserve, but I bet what actually happens is they get shot too. I hate to be a pessimist, but come on people, the poachers killed all of the Bengal Tigers that lived there before, what makes you think they won't do it again?

Basically the move just makes it easier for poachers, because a small population of Tigers is easier to overtake and kill than a large group. I'll be watching this one.

Image18_t.jpgI blogged about the recent Interview with John Rendall and Ace Bourke that the today show did. And in that interview, they answer the question, Whatever happened to Christian the Lion after the reunion?

The last time John saw him was during a trip to Kenya in 1974, three years after the reunion video. Christian was double the size, at least 500 lbs and looking very healthy. Christian recognized John then too! He was with wild lionesses and had litters of cubs. He had completely integrated into the wild. They never saw him again. And to the best of anyone's knowledge he went forth into that enormous conservation area and lived out his days with his pride.

There is a lovely video of the interview with Ace and John by Kerri-Anne Kennerley. They talk about their experiences when he was a cub. He was such a kind, gentle and intelligent lion. There are more pictures and videos and the pair reminisce about their relationship with Christian.

In part 2 John and Ace talk about Boy the lion who helped Christian rehabilitate and the days after the reunion video. They recount tales of Christian stalking a fully grown Rhino. A lovely interview, Ace and John are very eloquent and they truly loved their little lion. Please consider helping out the cause by donating to the George Adamson Wildlife Fund to continue their great efforts of conserving wildlife in Africa.

Blackjack_feral_cat_rescuejpg.jpgIn an earlier blog post, I asked for your signatures so that C.H.A.T. Celia Hammond Animal Trust organization could get into the 2012 Olympics site to rescue the feral cats that call it home.

Well, all our signatures helped, because C.H.A.T. was permitted onto the site to set up feeding and trapping stations for the 186 cats. There was one cat that was particularly allusive, they called him Blackjack, pictured here. They watched and waited for three weeks and finally caught him on July 11, 2008.

The rescuers had known he was there, but couldn't catch him the many times they set up their stations. When they were forced to leave on May 1, due to construction, they didn't think he would survive. But was sighted and the team came in and caught him.

He is a bit wild, but they are working to calm him and tame him and hope to find a home for him in the next month or so.

That is one lucky cat!
