John Rendall and Anthony "Ace" Bourke talk about Christian on the Today Show. They talk about the excitement they felt when they saw Christian. John and Ace are still involved in animal conservation with the George Adamson Wildlife Fund. If you are touched by this story, give generously to the fund so they can continue their conservation efforts at Wild Life Now.

reunion1_t.jpgThese are the final two parts to the movie: Christian, the lion who thought he was people. I keep calling it a movie, but it's really a documentary - it's a true story and there are no actors or stunt doubles. Christian the lion is played by Christian himself.

In part 9, tragedy strikes, and the story is told by George Adamson himself. Ace and John return to comfort George and to see how Christian is doing. Christian and the lionesses were out of the camp, but Ace and John waited. This is the part that you've seen before - the part where Christian jumps up and hugs his friends. Only now you can hear his grunts and his paws on the rocks. Much more realistic.

In part 10, you can see how Christian's comfort with Ace and John made Mona, Lisa and Supercub comfortable with them too. The film then shows Christian's parents in a cramped zoo and compares their lives to Christian's. Such a touching film. I just finished watching it and I am completely overwhelmed.

Image10_t.jpgIn Part 7 of Christian the Lion who thought he was people, two new lionesses Juma and Jessica, are introduced to Christian and Boy. They were too wild so it was up to Christian to befriend them and get them to stay in the little pride. But the wild lions outside of camp were too strong and too territorial.

In Part 8, George visits the Nairobi animal orphanage to get two more females Mona and Lisa, with Juma, that made three females, Christian and a recovering Boy in this little pride. Mona and Lisa were a little more tame than Juma so would require more care in rehabilitating them to the wild. Introducing and integrating these lions has to be done carefully.

What happens when you breed a Tiger and a Lion together? You get a Liger!

Image18_t.jpgI am totally intrigued by the story of Christian the LIon. I guess because I love cats and I have always wondered what it would be like to domesticate a wild cat. This story comes as close as I'll ever get to knowing what it is like to live with a wild cat. I've blogged about Christian before, you can see a brief video of Christian the Lion here.

The full story of Christian and how he was integrated into the wild, is available in ten minute segments. If you haven't already seen the first two segments of the movie, see Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room: The Movie Parts 1 and 2. And the next two segments of Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room: The Movie Parts 3 and 4

In this segment, Ace and John have to say goodbye to Christian the Lion and Christian has to start learning how to be a wild cat. Boy, Christian and Kitania along with George Adamson, start their own little family.

Part 6 of Christian's story repeats some of the earlier video. Start it at about 2:20 to pick up where the 5th segment leaves off. Boy and Christian went off to hunt together and Kitania was left behind by herself on the banks of the river. They waited and watched for her for three days.

A cat's daily diary vs a dog's daily diary...

stairs400_t.jpgI wrote a brief summary of the story of Christian the Lion a while back with a video that highlights their reunion. For the short version of the story, I suggest you see that video.

But for those of you who are intrigued by the full story of Christian, the full length movie is available but it has been cut into ten minute segments. If you haven't already seen the first two segments of the movie, see Christian, the lion who lived in my London living room: The Movie Parts 1 and 2

The movie is hard to find, because when it was released in the early seventies, the movie had three names:

Christian the Lion

The Lion at World's End

Christian, the lion who thought he was people

In this segment, they found a piece of land and built a compound for Christian and the humans to live in protection while Christian learned how to live in the wild. They introduced Christian to Boy, another tame lion who had been living wild for years. They hoped to create a new pride. Part 3 shows Boy, a surgery that Boy had to endure and the love and trust that Boy had in George. Lions are truly amazing animals.

In Part 4, we see the surgery and recovery of Boy and we find out that a female lion cub was found too. Then we see the introduction of Boy to Christian, who still seemed to have his natural wild instincts intact. Watching the three lions, Boy, Christian and the female Kitania interact was beautiful and exciting but we still don't know if Boy will accept Christian.

Image01_t.jpgI blogged about Christian the Lion a while back. But I can't believe that I actually found the movie! Christian the Lion was made into a movie staring Ace and John, Christian and Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. The story follows the truth closely, and even includes lots of footage of Christian playing with Ace and John. You can see they really loved each other.

So the story goes that Bill and Virginia, after having starred in the Movie Born Free (a movie about George Adamson - the Man who lived with Lions) were shopping for a desk. They wondered into the World's End Antique store and were shocked to find a lion there. They had first hand knowledge of the lion sanctuary run by George Adamson and were quick to help Ace and John relocate Christian to the wild. The movie clips below explain the story and show how this wild animal was raised to be a loving and gentle giant.

John and Ace were so dedicated to Christian, that they quit their jobs and went to live with Christian at Bill and Virginia's cottage while the arrangements were made to take him to Africa. What an amazing story. Enjoy the first two parts of the movie, I'll post the rest in the coming days! Read the article, Christian the Lion who lived in my London living room for more information.

A cat's daily diary vs a dog's daily diary...

bear-cat2.jpgIn January 2004 a little black cat named Muschi appeared in the bear area of the Berlin Zoo. The zoo keepers observed the cat interacting with one of the black bears named Mauschen and saw that they were respectful and careful with each other. They play with mice together and share their food and cuddle with each other. Amazing!

The zoo keepers had to separate the two when they were renovating the bear area. They put the bear inside a cage. They thought the cat would leave, instead, the bear roared and the cat meowed until they were reunited. So the cat remains in the bear area of the Berlin Zoo with the bear. They have lived like that for eight years.bear-cat1.jpg

The Zoo keepers have put up a sign to tell visitors that the cat and the bear are friends and respect each other. In spite of the sign, visitors often offer to take the cat home, but the zoo keepers reply, "you can take the cat only if you take the bear too!"

catandbearbestfriends3ia7.jpgMauschen the bear is 40 years old and is showing signs of aging. She may not be around too much longer, the zoo keepers will allow Muschi the cat to stay when Mauschen passes away. Until then, the pair continue to cuddle together and play together, even though the bear is slowing down.

Cats are so funny. Their curiosity and laziness are a comical combination. Check out this video. It's got a few older classic clips in with some newer footage of funny and cute cats. I love the one of the cat lying on its back, he tries to get up but is too tired, he lies on his back and falls asleep. Oh and the cat trying to walk over the balloon is hilarious! Enjoy!

Well if you're reading this page, you're probably a cat owner and you've probably had to deal with cat vomit. In most cases there isn't much to worry about. The reality is most cats throw up at some point in their lives; some more than others. Here are the most popular reasons why:

  • nervousness
  • excitement
  • stress
  • hair balls
  • if your cat is an outdoor cat, they may have eaten too much grass. Cats eat grass to help them deal with hair balls
  • may have an eaten an object that they shouldn't have eaten
  • cat may have ingested chocolate (chocolate is like poison to cats)
  • Generally speaking none of these issues are major issues. Call your vet if you notice the following:

  • blood in the vomit
  • your cat is vomiting and experiencing diarrhea
  • your cat is generally not him/herself and is very lethargic
  • Again, if you have concerns or issues, get a hold of your vet right away. That's the best course of action.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as of today, you can't buy or sell cat and dog pelts on eBay. This is good news for cats who are hunted down for their fur. Banning the sale of furs is the first step toward protecting cats. Europeans are forward thinkers, and I applaud them for taking this step.

KittyTies2-vi.jpgBut I find it appalling that a ban on fur has not already begun on the U.S. eBay website. You can read the press release here. It clearly states that a ban on cat and dog fur pelts is being considered in the U.S.

Considered? Why considered? Why are we standing around letting cat and dog pelts be sold on eBay? or anywhere for that matter?

And what remains a mystery, is why people still buy fur? Don't people get it? If it has fur, it had to come off of an animal. If it came off of an animal there had to be some act of violence committed on the animal to get the fur off.

Stop buying fur. And stop buying cat toys made from fur - even if you are sure it is rabbit or some other poor animal. Fur is attached to skin which decomposes, so the fur pelt has to be treated with a number of toxic chemicals so it doesn't rot. See where I am going here? If you give your cat a toy made from fur you are giving them poisons to play with.

The true ban on cat and dog pelt sales will come the day consumers make a conscience decision to not buy fur and products made from fur.

Finally a show about cats! Dr. Katrina makes house calls and shows people how to really relate to their cats. If you are having difficulties with your cat, tune in for pointers. Here is a video of Chumley, a cat that appears to have an attitude problem, a common problem among cats. But what I find interesting is how Dr. Katrina handles the situation. Her suggestions are effective. And what I really like about this show, is that we get to see how smart cats really are! Now this is good TV.

The other day, I showed you a video of a cute kitten having a Kitty Conversation with his owner. But now I hear that Burnsy, the talking cat was taken from his owner's house while she was away. Apparently, he is in the Turner Valley - Black Diamond area of Alberta, Canada near a farming community. If anyone has seen him or knows anything about this cat-napping, post your info here and I'll make sure you get in touch with Burnsy's mommy. Meanwhile, here is an older look at Burnsy while he has another conversation.

cat_food_bowl.jpgYes really, you can be a cat food taste tester! I'm not kidding. Dr. Pickering from Brock University has been conducting cat food taste testing experiements using human tasters in Australia and in Canada. He says that the human tasters rate cat food accurately which benefits our feline friends.

His research is to help cat food manufacturers know exactly what cats prefer in cat food. Humans are better able to describe the food and what parts of it are enjoyable for your cat. Cats, of course, are essential to the process of cat food tasting because they either eat it or they don't, so researchers get a pretty clear idea of what cats like and don't like. But it is helpful that researchers like Dr. Pickering know what exactly about the food makes it tasty for kitty.

good_cat_food_ingredients.jpgI did a post the other day advising cat owners what ingredients you should stay away from when selecting cat food. Incidentally, if your cat consistently rips off smelly farts, that's a concern possibly related to poor diet. I've taken the next logical step here to help you understand what the most desirable attributes and ingredients are for your cat's diet.

Let's look at the most obvious point. Your cat is a natural meat eater, any attempt to try and change their natural diet usually has negative effects. Domestic cats usually live better lives when they eat predominately wet food. Why you ask? The main reason is that many dry foods do not list meat as the most common ingredient in their ingredients. If meat isn't the main ingredient, you can bet that the ingredients could be grain or some sort of meat by product. Not good.

As we've blogged about in the past, it's fairly clear that wet food diets help to maintain your cat's health much better than dry food. Wet food is a great way to maintain your cat's hydration levels and this is a function that dry foods simply can't do as well. If you notice that your cat rarely drinks water or is reluctant to, you might want to consider giving them wet food.

Here are some other issues to consider:

  • Minerals in your cat's diet like iron, copper, potassium and zinc are all helpful to a cat's diet in small amounts.
  • Ash in small amounts (similar to scrapings on a BBQ grill) helps your cat process his food properly.
  • The first ingredient in your cat's food should be meat. Meat is a good source of protein, vitamin A, taurine and fatty acids.
  • Taurine in a nutrient that from a meat diet, it's an amino acid and it's essential to your cat's heart, eye functions and other essential functions.
  • Arginine is anohter amino acid that helps your cat manage their protein to maintain their health.
  • Like huamns, cat's require their fatty acids. If you see ingredients like linoleic and arachidonic, this is a good thing.
  • Generally speaking, cheaper is not better when referring to cat food. Cheaper foods can cause your cat to eat more in an effort to try and get as much nutrients out of it. The worse part is that you're basically guaranteeing that you will have some hefty vet bills down the road. Or worse yet, a cat with a shorter life expectancy. The most important issue is that your cat will live a healthy better life on higher quality food.

The best person you can talk to with regards to your cat's food is your vet. If you're concerned about the health of your cat, (I'm assuming you are because you're reading this) take the time to inquire with your vet about the best foods to feed your cat.

    A cat's daily diary vs a dog's daily diary...

independence_-day_cats.jpgCelebrate Independence Day with parades, fireworks and good food, but keep your cat safe and happy while you celebrate the Fourth of July.

You may be tempted to let your cat out to enjoy the day's events or to prowl around as usual, but in reality, your cat won't enjoy the day as much as you will. You'll both be happier in the long run if you keep your cat inside. Your cat won't get hurt or lost and you'll know that your cat is safe and waiting for you when you get home.

    yankee_doodle_cat_picture.jpg

Cats are easily agitated by loud noises of fireworks or sirens, unusual activity of parades and strangers in their neighborhood. What may seem like fun for you, will cause stress in your cat and may cause him to display aggressive behavior which will get him into trouble with neighborhood animals and people. Or worse, your cat might get so spooked that he gets into a fatal situation like in front of a moving car or trapped in an alley where nasty people are waiting for a frightened cat to torture. And the food... there is always something that smells good to your cat that he'll eat but it could make him sick.

Make this a happy holiday for your cat. Keep him indoors with plenty of food and water and a few toys to get him through the day. It will be hot so make sure your cat has shade and fresh or cool air - never leave him in a vehicle or in direct sunlight - cats can dehydrate and suffer a horrible death if they get too hot.

    fourth_of_july_cat_picture.jpg

Keep human foods away from your cat, especially sweet things like ice cream and chocolate - chocolate is toxic to cats.

If your cat show signs of aggressive behavior, it's often a reaction to high stress situations. Get him to a safe, quiet area where he can calm down.

If you think your cat might get out, follow our 5 tips for preventing your cat from becoming lost or stray. And also check out Stray Cats: 5 easy ways to protect your cat. Happy Independence Day!

stray_cat_ protect.jpg35% percent of pet cats will get lost in their lifetime. And fewer than 10% of those stray cats make it home again. To prevent your cat from becoming a sad statistic like this, there are a number of steps you can take.

    1) Have your pet wear a collar with your name address and current phone number on it. Get the metal ones, they don’t smudge and it’s harder to scratch them. There are many pet tag companies out there.

    2) Check your home and yard for possible break points. A determined cat can squeeze through a very small space. If you can fit your hand through, your cat can get their whole body through. And doors, cats have learned how to open doors, so make sure they latch securely.

    3) Introduce your cat to your neighbors. If your cat gets out, chances are that someone who lives close to you will see him. If they know it’s your cat, they’ll either let you know your cat is out or catch him for you.

    stray_lost_kittens_cats.jpg

    4) Put a sign on your door to alert rescuers that there is a cat in your house in case of an emergency. If there is a fire in your building while you are out, a sign on the door increases the chances that your cats will be removed from danger. Let rescue workers know how many pets you have in the house and your vet’s name and phone number.

    5) Get insurance for your pet – some policies cover loss or theft and some companies will help you find your pet.

For more information, read 5 tips to prevent your cat from getting lost.

preventing_stray_cats.jpgHere are 5 actions to take right now that will help to bring your cat home safely.

No matter how careful you are to prevent your cat from straying, 1 in 3 cats will be lost this year and over 90% of them won’t get back home to you. There are things you can do right now to get your cat home where he belongs.

pictures_of_stray_cats_lost.jpg1) Have copies of recent photos of your cat to distribute, email or fax to any and all of your contacts and local animal shelters. A picture can get you reunited faster and prove that the cat is yours.

    2) If you haven’t already done it, get your cat a microchip and registered with a good company.

    3) Have a copy of your cat’s medical records and your vet's contact information at home or on your PDA. If your cat is found, you might have to prove that he’s been vaccinated or she’s been spayed. And if the cat has any allergies or illnesses or special dietary needs, it's all there in one place for anyone who cares for your cat.

stray_cats.jpg4) Make a list of emergency phone numbers. The company your cat’s microchip is registered with, your veterinarian and emergency animal hospital closest to you, local humane society or animal shelter, people who you can call on to help find your cat or who can help you treat your found cat that's been injured.

    5) Have an Emergency Supply Kit ready with a carrier, food and water, blankets and a First Aid for Cats manual. If you cat is injured you might need to transport him to an emergency clinic right away.

This is the time of year when hundreds of cats get lost or stray too far from home. These steps will help you locate your cat in the event that your cat strays or more accurately, is chased or scared away from you.
