Iowa mayor offers $5 bounty for local cats, Gee.. I wonder what could go wrong with this plan?
The votes are in! The mayor of Randolph Iowa, Vance Trivley is the winner of the 2008 Town Idiot award!
If you live in Randolph Iowa, you might want to consider keeping your cat nearby or on a cat leash. In what would appear to be a plan that is devoid of intelligence or reason, an Iowa mayor has decided the best way to deal with feral cats in the neighborhood is to offer $5 to any person that can bring a cat in to the local vet. Once there, (if unclaimed) the cat will be put down.
According to a news report on KPTM's website, local residents have been complaining about the issue for some time now. "There's been a cat problem in this town for 11 years," says one local Randolph resident.
What some of the residents and the mayor don't seem to understand in Randolph is that the best way to deal with feral cats is to trap, neuter and release them back to the wild. If they had implemented that plan years ago, they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now. Towns like Knoxville Tennesse are shining models of how you deal with feral cats.
The problem with paying people to return cats to the town is that you're not dealing with the real problem at the root and finally, someone is bound to lose an actual home pet due to mistaken identity.
If you believe that a moron in a hurry could have devised a better plan than the mayor of Iowa, you might consider supporting the Feral Feline Organization.
