Check out this video of a cute little black kitten taking a bath. This kitten loves the water! He is splashing around with a toy and not even attempting to get out! He is so cute to watch. It’s funny when he makes a big pounce in the water and get his face wet – but he doesn’t mind!

This video proves that cats can love water.

What do you get when you have a cat video and poorly matched music? A pretty funny cat video anyways...

For centuries cats have been used as science experiments and now…. Cloning scientists in South Korea have manipulated a protein gene in cats that has fluorescent properties. The cloned cats glow in the dark after being exposed to ultraviolet light. No, they don't come in green and red. The cat pictured on the left is being exposed to the ultraviolet light and the cat on the right is what the cats look like when the lights go out.

I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to see Neo in the dark, but creating animals for scientific study? They aren’t going to be loved or cared for…. why would they be treated well… if they die or don’t fulfill a scientific purpose.. they are disposed of and all you have to do is make another one. These cats get to live out there days in a cage being constantly poked and prodded.

Apparently, this scientific manipulation is supposed to help develop treatments for human genetic diseases. And recreate endangered wild cats. I'm not sure how manipulating these cats genes will help humans, but how about this? Call me crazy but... here's an idea, let’s preserve the animals we have left on our planet rather than create new ones in a test-tube!

Can cats communicate with each other? I think this video answers the question..

It’s not too late to help! Sign the online petition or donate toThe Celia Hammond Animal Trust (C.H.A.T.)

CHAT has been trying to set up rescue missions only to be denied access to the site of the 2012 Olympics. The Olympic Delivery Authority (O.D.A) said there were only 5 cats on the site, but CHAT has already rescued 150 cats so far! And there are still more to rescue. Those poor feral cats! Their homes have been destroyed by the demolition so pregnant queens, three litters of newborn kittens and lactating moms have been forced further into hiding.

1. Start Early - a kitten will be more open to the daily brushing than an older cat. But cats are smart and they love attention so even older cats can be trained to accept the brush.

2. Gauge Your Cat’s Mood Before You Begin – a playful cat is not a good candidate for tooth brushing! Wait until he is in a more relaxed mood.

3. Reward, Reward, Reward! – Cat’s respond to treats and grooming so include plenty of both in your brushing routine.

4. Stay Calm - even if you don’t think so, your cat senses your mood and responds to it, so if you are calm, your cat will be too.

5. Talk To Your Cat - Keep talking to your cat in a gentle soothing tone to keep in as calm and relaxed state as he can be.

Senior cats need their teeth cared for too – they are at higher risk for gum disease and liver damage, heart disease and the list goes on! It maybe stressful for you and your senior cat to get into a tooth brushing routine, but it is really necessary. And unlike old dogs, you can teach an old cat new tricks!

black cat.jpeg

There are products on the market that help keep their teeth and gums clean and to strengthen their jaw muscles.

I hear of so many senior cats that can’t eat properly because they don’t have the strength to chew. Not good. Get your cat a chew toy and brush his teeth.

cats in grass.jpeg Thinking about herbal treatment for cats? There are so many theories and so many people selling stuff that is toxic to cats that it's really a buyer beware market. The problem is that there are no regulations and no real evidence to show what works and what doesn't. Its a bit of a risk, but if you are concerned about your cat's health, herbal treatment for cats might be the way to go. But first, always ask a vet, if your vet is not into herbal treatments, refer to this list of vets who practice alternative medicine. Some safe herbal treatment for cats include:

-Acidophilus - to restore intestinal health and maybe even correct diarrhea and constipation in cats.

-Catnip - it doesn't work for all cats, usually unneutered males like it the most because it resembles female cat urine.

-Topical Epsom Salts - don't let your cat lick it because it caused diarrhea! But it has been helpful to draw out infections from nail beds and soothe itchy paws.

-Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids - for a shiny coat and tests are showing that they help relieve cats of allergies.

-Glucosamine and Chondroitin - are used to treat arthritis in cats with much success.

-Milk Thistle - for when your cat's liver is under stress from some form of poisoning - but make sure you see your vet, cats have very sensitive livers.

herbal remiedies.jpeg

Of all the herbal treatment for cats I've researched over the years, these are the only ones that are proven safe for cats. But please, please, talk to your vet before giving any herbal treatment for cats. Your vet can alert you to harmful reactions and write it in your cat's medical chart for future reference. If your vet is not into herbal treatments and you are, then maybe it is time to get a new vet

If you see the symptoms bloody stool in cats, you need to collect a sample of the stool and get to the vet for a complete exam. Your vet is going to ask you a few questions so be prepared by taking stock of what could cause the blood.

Twelve questions your vet will ask you about symptoms bloody stool in cats:

1. Did your cat eat any bones or chew on other non-food items such as wood?

2. Did your cat eat any spoiled food? (did you leave the soft food out too long in his food dish?)

3. Have you changed his diet recently? (this includes treats, hard and soft food, and water or other liquids)

4. Has your cat eaten any people food? If so, what did he eat?

5. Has your cat been bitten by or playing with another animal?

6. Has your cat experienced any injuries to the anal area? (like a pelvic fracture, or a fall, or an anal temperature probe?)

7. Has your cat been rubbing his anus on the floor or carpets?

8. When did you first notice the blood in his stool?

9. Has your cat been straining or constipated? (your cat could have hemorrhoids)

10. How many times has your cat defecated in the past 24 hours?

11. Are there other symptoms your cat has? (such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, drinking a lot of water, and lethargic?)

12. Have there been any changes in the cats environment? (are you renovating? did you move the litter box? a new kitten in the house?)

Basically the bottom line is this, if you see the symptoms bloody stool in cats, put the stool in a plastic bag and get your cat and the stool to your vet as soon as possible.

cat-computer-furniture.jpgHey, are you like me? Are you tired of your cat trying to dominate the space near your computer while you're working? Well finally someone has come up with a solution for people like you and me. It's called the Kit-In Box and it's a perch that is designed to be placed in an office space on top of a desk. The product is made by a company named The Refined Feline located in New York City and in my opinion is one of the smartest products made for cats in a long time.

From my own personal experience, my cat jumps up on my computer desk and tries to find a place to lay down. If there isn't a clear space on the desk for her, (which most of the time there isn't) she'll make her own spot on top of my important papers. Over time, this becomes a battle between you and your cat. In the end, I ended changing the way I work at my work station to accommodate my cat. Not good.

The Kit-In-Box has high sides and a comfortable cushion ideal for any desk hogging cat. The product comes in an array of colors to match most work spaces. The best part about this invention is that it keeps the loose cat hair away from my computers that I was constantly vacuuming away at home. If you work from home or do a considerable amount of work at home, this is the ideal product for you in my opinion.

The next product that The Refined Feline should make is the heated pad Kit-In-Box! My cat would love that. You can see this awesome product here.

lion_tackles_woman_video.jpgSo let me get this straight. The lion gets kicked in the head for being a lion? Nice. This video shows a playful lion at a photo-shoot that (just outside of Toronto at the Bowmanville Zoo) ultimately tackles the woman practicing martial arts in front of him. The video clearly illustrates why you shouldn't use wild cats in photo-shoots. It's a dumb play and the cat doesn't deserve to get kicked in the head. Quite frankly, the officials from the Bowmanville Zoo deserve the kick in the head. They have a choice of being there, the lion doesn't.

The lady (Gitanjali Kolanad) goes on to whine about the fact that she was tackled by a 400 pound cat. Well of course she was tackled! From the very beginning, you can see that the handlers have no control over this large cat. What did they expect? Did they expect the lion to come and cuddle with her? Sorry, the lion gets my sympathy here.

You can hear one of the people say that he's "playing" when he lunges at them. If the Bowmanville Zoo had quality handlers and staff they would know the cat wants to play and probably won't be controlled if he truly wants to pounce on someone.

Remind me not to take my kids to the Bowmanville Zoo. On the heals of the Tiger incident in San Francisco, they decide to shoot this video? Are the officials at the Bowmvanville zoo that devoid of intelligence? This "back woods" move shows that they have no regard for their wild animals and would rather put them in jeopardy to make a few dollars. Idiots, complete and total idiots. All of them.

What can be causing the symptoms bloody stool in cats? There are several possible causes so it is really important that you take a sample of the bloody stool and your cat to the vet right away.

Symptoms bloody stool in cats could be caused by:

1. Parasites - yep, worms, round worms, tapeworms, get your cat treated right away, parasites kill your cat slowly and painfully.

2. Allergy to food - if you've recently changed your cat's diet or if your cat has been on the same diet for a really long time, allergies can develop and cause intestinal bleeding.

3. Polyps

4. Cancer - cats can get cancer.

5. Colitis - a very painful condition caused by poor diet.

6. Damage to the bowel - could be caused by your cat eating something or a bite from another animal.. or lots of stuff..

7. Blood clots - a dark tar-like blood indicates a problem higher up in the intestines of your cat.

8. Constipation - what are you feeding your cat?

9. Diarrhea - again, what are you feeding your cat?

10. Treating your cat like a little dog. Cats have a completely different physiology from dogs so if a product says it's safe for cats and dogs, then you need to stop giving it to your cat. There is a lot of misinformation about cat health out there and it is leading to many loved family cats suffering needlessly.

If you see the symptoms bloody stool in cats, it isn't good. Take a sample of the stool and your cat to the vet right away.

orange-kitten.jpg Kittens have baby teeth when they are born. As soon as you get your kitten, it is a good idea to introduce him to toothpaste and brushing right away. It helps establish a routine and it helps massage sore little gums when they start teething.

At about 4-6 months they go through a stage where they are chewing on everything. Your fingers, toys, shoes, strings, anything and everything regardless of the dangers! This is a sign that your kitten is teething. They loose their baby teeth and their full-grown adult teeth start coming in.

All this chewing can be a problem, it may be cute to let your kitten chew on your fingers with his baby teeth, but if you let him chew as a kitten, he’ll want to chew as an adult – its not as much fun when he’s leaving holes in your skin!

Watch your kitten closely… you might even see a baby tooth fall out!

Something like Petstages chew toys are perfect for your kitten while he is teething.

What are cat lovers ordering at Tokyo’s Café Calico Cat?

“I’ll take my tea with a Tabby”

This is a picture of Harumi Kaneko cuddling with "Choco", one of the cats customers can play with for about $8.00 an hour at the Cat Café Calico.

Housing regulations in Tokyo don’t allow pets. So if you can’t have a cat, the next best thing is going to a place like Café Calico Cat. Where you can curl up with a good book, a warm fire and purring cat. It’s a dream come true for Japanese cat lovers. There are three busy cat cafés in Tokyo. All three are filled with lovely, well-groomed cats for patrons to cuddle with before getting on with their busy days.

Which makes me wonder about the 600,000 cats and dogs gassed in Japan yearly? Where are those cat lovers when the gas chamber fills up with gas and the cats scream for their lives? Or later when they aren't quite dead yet and they burn alive?

These seemingly innocent cafés that are beautifully furnished and attract wealthy Japanese are really contributing to the overpopulation of cats in Japan. The cafés don't take in stray cats, they get their cats from breeders. So while a privileged few are being cuddled by people like Mrs. Kaneko, just outside the comforts of the café - poor, lonely, starved cats are being rounded up and taken to gas chambers where they are mercilessly killed and incinerated by the hundreds every day.

Why do so many cats have to suffer when there are so many people in Japan who supposedly love cats? Please sign the Japan's cats and dogs need our help petition. Maybe together we can put an end to the needless suffering of so many cats in a nation that clearly adores cats.

Cats and Teeth Cleaning: Top Five Tips for Healthy Teeth.

1. Brush your cat’s teeth daily. Just once a day will keep him from experiencing painful gum diseases and will also keep his liver, heart, spleen and other internal organs healthy.

2. Check for signs of trouble such as bad breath, bleeding or inflamed gums, or loose missing or broken teeth and tartar. If your cat simply will not allow you to brush his teeth, it may be too late – see a vet immediately because he may already have a dental disease.

3. Feed your cat high quality cat food and treats. Lower quality foods and treats contain too much starch and sugars that stick to teeth and cause damage and tartar build-up. Ask your vet about foods and treats designed for healthy teeth.

4. Get special cat toys designed for chewing, and that promote dental hygiene. Petstages has several different ones for teething kittens, adult cats and senior cats.

5. And most importantly, have your cat’s teeth professionally cleaned by your veterinarian at least once a year. Sometimes cats need a professional cleaning every six months.

vance-trivley-is-an-idiot.jpgWell it seems like the mayor of Randolph Iowa finally gave in to the public pressure with regards to his 5$ bounty on the local feral cat population. As we indicated earlier, the best way to deal with a feral cat population is to trap, neuter and release them. I'm assuming that the mayor of Randolph got the message finally.

Even though the guy finally dropped the bounty, I truly wonder where this guy's head is at. The very thought of offering money to kill cats is pretty ridiculous. At least he did the right thing in the end.

Special thanks to groups like the Alley Cat Allies for keeping the pressure on this story.

We've blogged about this before and now we're asking for your help. Sign this form if you believe that it is a barbaric act to kill and in some cases skin cats that are still alive.

The Chinese government has gone as far as telling people that cats are unhealthy and are the cause of many illnesses. The propaganda has gotten so bad that many pet owners have left their cats out in the street to be collected by the Beijing death squads. Don't just sit there, do something about it.

Does a name like Ruth Butterworth sound like someone that can kick some butt? Well that's exactly what she did!

Ruth Butterworth reacted quickly to a hungry python that was probably going to eat her cat for lunch. "I just started punching the thick part of the snake where it was about the size of my arm," Ms Butterworth said. "I wasn't looking, I just kept punching until it let go." The mild mannered woman broke her wrist in the process but did manage to save her cat Tuffy.

Only days before, Ms. Butterworth lost another cat named Coco to the same python. Needless to say, if anyone or anything gets near this lady's cat, they're going to have to answer to her.

But really, think about it, if your cat is scratching your furniture, you’ve got to find an alternative. Maddy’s favorite (and my favorite because I love football) is the M.A.X Football she sleeps inside it and scratches on the outside of it. M.A.X has got some really kewl stuff that your cat will like and won't look like an eye sore in your home.

Imagine a 400lb Lion hugging you!? It turns out that the King of the Jungle is just a really, really big kitten.

This woman rescues big cats in Colombia. The lion was abused, injured and malnourished. She took him in and cared for him until he was healthy – the two developed a close bond. He loves her. He really loves her. You’ll see in the video that he recognizes her right away and so excited that she’s there. He jumps up and wraps his paws around her neck and kisses her! He is actually hugging her. He acts more affectionate than some domestic cats out there! You’ve just got to see the love!

Here is another video of the same lion and the same woman – she has several big cats in her care.

Once the greatest jobs a man could have, cat herding is one of the lost arts of our time. This video pays tribute to the brave Catboys of the late 1800's....

Herbal treatment for cats' illnesses seems like a good idea, but beware of the risks. The truth is, most herbal remedies sold for cats are formulated for dogs and are actually toxic to cats. Cats can become really sick or even die with prolonged use.

Pretty scary huh?

It seems that cats process toxins and chemicals very different than dogs do, so even if it says it is safe for cats, you need to look out for....

Fix the humans, and then we've fixed the Feral Cat Problem.

Everyone is talking about what a problem feral cats are. But no one is saying anything about the fact that feral cats were once domestic family pets that one day, the family decided they didn't want.

So how did these feral cats appear in your neighborhoods?

You've spent some time getting your cat used to the toothpaste and you are relaxed and your cat's happy, so now it is time to go in with the brush!

Hold on....not so fast. Introduce the brush slowly, put some toothpaste on the brush and let your cat chew on the brush - it'll floss and clean the teeth at the same time.

If kitty is getting suspicious, stop for the day but if you think you can get the brush right on his teeth, go for it.

Sometimes, all I have to do is just hold Neo's mouth open with one hand and brush with the other, but other days... it's not so easy...

On those days, here's how I can brush his teeth. I have to hold Neo's whole body, otherwise he pushes me away with his powerful legs. So I sit on the floor with my knees up to my chest. I hold Neo's body on my lap (so he is facing to the right) and press my legs against my chest just enough to retrain him but not to hurt him of course.

Then that leaves both of my hands free - my left hand holds his mouth open and I brush his teeth with my right hand.

I work quickly and often he gets toothpaste all over his cheeks, but when I release him, I pet him and tell him what a good boy he is.

He is very forgiving.

Products you can use for brushing are outlined here

The votes are in! The mayor of Randolph Iowa, Vance Trivley is the winner of the 2008 Town Idiot award!

If you live in Randolph Iowa, you might want to consider keeping your cat nearby or on a cat leash. In what would appear to be a plan that is devoid of intelligence or reason, an Iowa mayor has decided the best way to deal with feral cats in the neighborhood is to offer $5 to any person that can bring a cat in to the local vet. Once there, (if unclaimed) the cat will be put down.

According to a news report on KPTM's website, local residents have been complaining about the issue for some time now. "There's been a cat problem in this town for 11 years," says one local Randolph resident.

What some of the residents and the mayor don't seem to understand in Randolph is that the best way to deal with feral cats is to trap, neuter and release them back to the wild. If they had implemented that plan years ago, they wouldn't be in the situation they are in now. Towns like Knoxville Tennesse are shining models of how you deal with feral cats.

The problem with paying people to return cats to the town is that you're not dealing with the real problem at the root and finally, someone is bound to lose an actual home pet due to mistaken identity.

If you believe that a moron in a hurry could have devised a better plan than the mayor of Iowa, you might consider supporting the Feral Feline Organization.

I was in Vegas a couple of years ago and I bought a plush toy replica of a Snow Leopard for my daughter. Little did I know that all we may have left of these majestic animals will be plush toys.

Today 12 nations (Afghanistan, India, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, China, Bhutan, and Uzbekistan) have come together to try and find a way to save these rare and beautiful animals.

According to most reports, the greatest threat to Snow Leopards are poaching, loss of habitat and increased conflict with humans over livestock. Depending on who you talk to, there may be as little as 3500 of these cats left in the world.

I've made a slideshow of the snow leopard, visit my pictures of cats page and select the snow leopard gallery.

You can make a difference by donating to the Snow Leopard Trust.

The video below was filmed by the BBC and is apparently the first video ever shot of this cat in the wild. Check out the size of the tail on this cat. Incredible.

If you haven't seen the first video we featured of Simon's cat, you should see it here. In this video, Simon's cat goes through desperate measures to try and get his owner to let him back in the house. Hilarious!

The final word on supplements. Do cats need supplements? or is this just something that health conscious humans think their cats need?

There are basic requirements that your cat needs daily to live a healthy life. Good quality proteins and amino acids are essential, especially taurine, without it, your cat will likely die or suffer serious medical conditions such as heart disease.

Then there are vitamins and minerals that cats need in the proper ratio and in the proper form. And of course, Essential Fatty Acids - yes cats need fish oil too! Maybe that's why they like fish so much!

So with all these requirements, how do you know if your cat is getting enough? The bottom line is talk to your vet about it. So here are some guidelines for answering the question, do cats need supplements?

Ok folks, serious stuff here. For the second time in recent months, Hartz is performing a voluntary recall of one of their cat related products.

According to the press release, Hartz believes that there may be concerns with bottles of Vitamin Care for Cats within a certain lot; they may have Salmonella.

Salmonella is a serious health concern for cats. If you give your cat the Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats, you might want review the bottles for lot code SZ 22771, UPC number 32700-97701. According to Hartz, this effects 739 bottles. If you can't find the lot code or UPC number on your bottle, you should stop using the product just in case.

If your cat is exhibiting symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, nausea or fever; you should contact your vet right away.

Kudos to Hartz for reacting very quickly on this one. You can call them at 1-800-275-1414 if you have any questions or concerns.

Disciplining a cat like you discipline a dog will lead to bigger behavior problems. Dogs and cats have completely different social structures. A common mistake is to think that your cat will react to discipline like a dog will. Dogs form hierarchies. There is a “top dog” (usually the owner, but not always ;) and they learn to obey the “top dog”. But cats form social groups based on territory and respect of that territory.

So if you want to train your dog, you establish that you are the “top dog” in physical ways. But if you want to train your cat, you have to establish your territory. It’s a big mistake to hit your cat, or rub his nose in his feces. You’ll only make your cat fear you, which leads to more discipline problems because then they do things out of fear.

You can tell a lot about Paris Hilton’s character by the way she treats her pets. Regardless of the fact that she has been in the news a lot lately for all sorts of things. Videos of her having sex with different guys…she was jailed last year. She went on David Lettermen (the second time) and said she was going to support a lot of not for profits.. but hasn’t. She’s even been video taped at a club using racial slurs. All of these things could be explained simply by immaturity, lack of guidance, and a lost girl just trying to find herself. Would the real Paris Hilton please stand up?

Well, Paris Hilton has revealed her true nature recently, by abandoning a living, breathing, beautiful animal. This cowardly act tells us she has no strength of character, no morals, no sense of decency. So any bit of sympathy I may have had for her, poor little rich kid, is gone. She really should have all her pets taken away and hell she should be caged up.
